To demonstrate just how far the electric car has come, they now warrant their own motor festival with the Ecovelocity Show at Battersea Power Station for the next four days – though they have covered their options by calling it the’ Low-Carbon Motor Festival’.
Having had a look round, there does seem to be some evidence that electric cars are a now a real option and here to stay. There’s lots of the usual rubbish and insanity but equally the Nissan Leaf and Vauxhall Ampera – plus the forthcoming Renault range - look seriously engineered and far from token efforts.
There’s a test track on hand and nearly all of the motors are available to try - as long as you take your driving licence. We had a go in the Leaf and have to say it was very impressive stuff – though they are going to have to sort the charging infrastructure if it’s going to pay back Nissan the billions they must have invested in the project.
Certainly worth a look, but a shame that a low carbon motor festival hadn’t thought of having anywhere to park bicycles!
